Pie-Powder
being
Dust
from the Law Courts
Collected
and Recollected
on the Western Circuit
by a Circuit Tramp
( J. Alderson Foote)
ISBN 0 9530897 1 3
The
history of the Circuit was first documented in a book called
"Pie-Powder" and was published originally in 1911 by
John Murray (Publishers) Ltd. When it was re-printed in 1973
by EP Publishing Ltd. it soon became out of print. When the
latter company was bought out, the copyright lapsed.
In
the late 90s Gill Richards, Circuit Secretary, re-typed the
whole of the text; Dr. David Pugsley re-indexed the book, and
it is now available and stands as an original work. The
hardback book costs £15 (including postage and packing in the
UK) from the Western Circuit
Office.
The
reminiscences of so many eminent lawyers have been written,
either by themselves or by those who were once their friends,
that it has occurred to a mere Circuit Tramp to try the experiment
of recording what he remembers of a circuit and a profession,
rather than the history of a professor or a circuiteer. In truth
that which men remember about themselves is generally that which
others are most willing to forget; and the autobiographer would
give most pleasure who could set down on paper his friends'
recollections of him in place of his own.
But although men remember little worthy of mention concerning
themselves, there are few so unobservant as to pass through
life without noticing much that was memorable in others. As
the years pass by the storehouse of memory becomes more crowded,
until the time comes when we forget more quickly than we acquire,
and recollection loses more at one end of the chain than it
gains at the other. I am myself conscious of having forgotten
so much that once seemed worth remembrance, that the task of
setting the residue down on paper must be commenced at once,
if it is to be attempted at all.
