In recent years and in modern times much has been made of the high fee earners at the bar, ignoring the altruistic attitude of the Bar. Over 330 members of the Western Circuit and pupils have signed up for the Circuit's Free Representation Unit (FRU), which exists for those of limited means who apply through Citizens Advice Bureaux and Victim Support across the Circuit. The Unit has also been recognised with an award for Outstanding Commitment to Victim and Witness Support in 2007.

The citation read: "… we have been able to access the services of Barristers to help us with our Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals. The knowledge and expertise the WCFRU are able to contribute has undoubtedly increased the success rate of our CICA Appeals."

Guy Opperman of 3 Paper Buildings holds regular surgeries for Victim Support and advises on appeals, the management of cases and drafting. He has helped with well over 80% of the referred Schemes, accepted cases every year, and 3 Paper Buildings has regularly provided barristers to represent applicants at hearings.

IMPORTANT

BAR COUNCIL RULES APPLY WHICH MEANS THAT DIRECT REFERRAL BY APPLICANTS IS NOT POSSIBLE - APPLICANTS CAN ONLY APPLY BY REFERENCE TO A CAB OR SOLICITOR WORKING PRO BONO.
